Physical Therapy Assistant Schools

There are many individuals who want to become physical therapy assistants, but are not in a position to join regular schools to obtain Associate degrees. To their relief, various schools in America are now offering online physical therapy assistant programs. The duration and fees of these online courses are much less than those of regular courses.

The names of these schools that offer online courses are:

? Whatcom Community College in Washington

? Clark State Community College in Ohio

? San Juan College in New Mexico

? Gateway Community College in Arizona

? Jefferson State Community College in Alabama

All these schools are accredited by CAPTE (Commission on the Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education). The programs of these schools contain both the academic coursework as well as clinical training. Subjects like chemistry, physiology, introduction to physical therapy, remedial work, and biology are taught. Students are given support through online lectures and computer-based study materials. They are supposed to submit their assignments through e-mail. There will be regular online assistance from instructors to guide students through each course.

Students will have to join a facility to do their clinical practice. During this training, they will have to learn, as well apply, skills that they have learned during the course. At the end of training, students will have to be evaluated by the health-care facility supervisor. This evaluation report will play an important role in deciding the job and salary prospects for the students after they have completed their degrees.

Online programs have their own benefits as well as drawbacks. Benefits include the flexibility of timing and less fees for coursework. Students can complete all of the coursework at their home. The drawback is that online degrees do not hold as much value as regular degrees. Though the schools are always ready to provide extra assistance to individuals. Another drawback is that one is not able to make new contacts with people aspiring to be a physical therapy assistant. These contacts can make a lot of difference in one?s career. It is also seen that those individuals who join online programs take things for granted and do not concentrate as much as they should on their studies. Whereas in a campus program one studies with a strict schedule and is away from distractions of home.

After graduating with an associate degree one can find a job in nearby hospitals and nursing homes. The Demand of physical therapy assistants is very high all across the country and this demand is only going to rise in coming years.

Eliot Berson, M.D., of Mass. Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School, Receives Visionary Award from Foundation Fighting Blindness

BOSTON (June 29, 2012) Eliot L. Berson, M.D., director of the Berman-Gund Laboratory for the Study of Retinal Degenerations located at the Mass. Eye and Ear, recently received the Foundation Fighting Blindness Visionary Award. Mr. Gordon Gund, Chairman of the Maryland-based Foundation Fighting Blindness, presented Dr. Berson with the award at the foundation's "Dining in the Dark" event on Thursday, June 21 at the Boston InterContinental Hotel.

Other recipients awarded include Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick and Joshua S. Boger, Ph.D., founder of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, an international company headquartered in Cambridge, Mass. Mass. Eye and Ear President and CEO John Fernandez attended the event.

The Visionary Award was presented to Dr. Berson for his important role in research to advance the understanding of potentially blinding diseases and for the development of the first treatment for retinitis pigmentosa.

"Our studies have led to a better understanding of the causes of hereditary retinal degenerations at the DNA level and also have led to the first treatment for the common forms of retinitis pigmentosa. We have found that a high-dose of vitamin A combined with an oily fish diet and lutein will, on average, extend vision for up to 20 additional years, thereby making it possible for many patients with retinitis pigmentosa to see for their entire lives. We were also the first to show that high-dose vitamin E supplementation aggravates the course of these diseases," said Dr. Berson during his speech.

Dr. Berson earned his degree from Harvard Medical School and has served as director of Mass. Eye and Ear Electroretinography Service since 1970 and as director of Harvard Medical School's Berman-Gund Laboratory for the Study of Retinal Degenerations at Mass. Eye and Ear since 1974. Dr. Berson is also the William F. Chatlos Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Berson's recent Visionary Award was one of many other recognitions for his research including the Llura Liggett Gund Award also from the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the Fransceschetti Award of the International Society for Genetic Eye Diseases, the Friedenwald Award of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the MERIT Award of the National Eye Institute, the Pisart Vision Award of the New York Lighthouse International and the Ludwig von Sallmann Prize from the International Congress of Eye Research.

Do You Actually Use Voice Commands on Your Smartphone? [Chatroom]

If the last month has made anything evident, it's that tech companies are not treating voice recognition as a gimmick, and in fact, are increasingly paying more attention to it. But like our friend Matt Buchanan points out, it's sort of de-humanizing. Is this something you actually use? How do you use it? Do you feel comfortable talking to your phone in public? Blueberry Smash Cocktail with Blueberries and St. Germain liqueur ...

I recently spied this cocktail while thumbing through a recent issue of Bon Appetit magazine and it sounded perfect for summer with berries, citrus and St. Germain (San-Jer-Man), an all-natural elderflower liqueur produced in France. If you have not tried St. Germain, it?s a lovely liqueur that is made from processing fresh, handpicked blossoms of the elderflower found in the Alps. It has a wonderful floral nose with hits of pear, peach and grapefruit zest so it?s a great pairing with many fruits, champagne and in this case, vodka.

As often happens I knew when I saw the recipe I would love to make it but I had none of the ingredients available save for the liqueur so I anticipated it would happen at a later date. You know what happens with those don?t you? Too often they never happen; an article or idea will get filed away to only be forgotten.

Why was this cocktail so lucky? Call it providence that I received my bi-weekly box of produce from Door to Door Organics just a few days after reading the article. Even though I have the option to tailor what I get in my delivery; without fail I forget what I?ve ordered and it?s always a surprise when I open my box. It?s like a gift to myself each and every two weeks! This week included beets, watermelon, nectarines, blueberries, lemons and limes?it was meant to be don?t you think?

Not unlike a mojito, it requires a bit of smashing. If you don?t have a muddler then just use the end of a wooden spoon; the more flavor you can extract from the fruits the better. This cocktail was everything I had hoped for. It is simply summer. Berries, citrus and vodka combine with the St. Germain and create a cocktail that is perfectly balanced with a definite citrus edge. Not overly sweet, it?s just right!

Blueberry Smash

Perfect in the heat of summer; this cocktail is filled with fruit but is not an overly sweet cocktail; just overly good!

Ingredients

  • 2 lemons, sliced into rounds
  • 2 limes, sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup (loosely packed) fresh mint leaves plus sprigs for garnish
  • 1 1/2 cups vodka
  • 3/4 cup St-Germain (elderflower liqueur)

Preparation

  1. Using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, coarsely mash lemon and lime slices, blueberries, and mint leaves in a large pitcher. Stir in vodka, St-Germain, and 2 cups of ice cubes.
  2. Divide drink among coupe or highball glasses; top with more ice cubes. Garnish each drink with a mint sprig.

4 and a half weeks left ? Hellesbelles Misconceptions on Life

I can?t believe that?s all there is til my due date. I found out I was pregnant very early on- I was only about 2 weeks along from conception when I took the test- but of course they measure from the start of your last cycle so at this point, I have gone the same amount of time as I had left when I first found out. (That?s very confusing, but read it slowly and it will make sense I think).

I?m starting to get to a slightly panicky/ sad stage because the baby shower that was in the works never happened. My sister in laws and mother in law threw a wonderful little shower when we were down at the lake a couple of weeks back, but it doesn?t look like there will be a shower that includes my side of the family and my friends. I realize this is a sad statement on my own family that no one cared to do this for me, but I was under the impression that it was all taken care of- my sister in law and I had come up with a date and a theme, and she asked for my address list, but that was as far as it went. I guess this is where not having close friends outside of my husband?s family becomes a downside- no one to throw a baby shower for me. I know I shouldn?t complain, but I was looking forward to the fun of doing a girly shower with games and decorations and hoping (selfishly I know) that I might get a few more necessities checked off the list before I had to go buy stuff. I had so much fun with the registries- finding things that we needed and I loved- but I could have saved myself the trouble since no one remembered I was registered anywhere until it was too late.

I?m trying to be positive about all of this and remind myself that I have a ton of clothes now and a few blankets and things, but its hard when I keep thinking that that?s it- no furniture, no bath, no first aid items, none of the other things I would normally consider baby essentials except the diapers I?ve been making and a diaper cake worth of disposables. Money is tight right now- we?re just trying to pay off the last third of the midwife?s bill (and do it quickly since I totally spaced on the date we needed to have it paid by) so that doesn?t leave much for buying the glider I desperately want for rocking her to sleep in or the crib I would love to have for nap time (we plan to co-sleep and I know at first I?m probably going to be sleeping right along with her, but there will come a point when I can lay her down maybe and then where will I put her? Jarell will be sticking close to home starting tomorrow when he gets home from Iowa so the larger paychecks that we?ve been relying on to take care of extra expenses will be gone and we?ll be back to the just barely pay the bills type of paychecks.

I know things will work out- there are many people who get by with much much less- but its very hard not to be sad when someone asks me when the baby shower is and all I can say is there probably won?t be one.

Trying to get away from all this negativity, there are wonderful things happening too- I get to have Jarell home for the next? several weeks and that is beyond awesome. I told him I loved him so much I would go through being pregnant and giving birth if it meant keeping him close to me for that long ;) . This job in Iowa has stretched out so long that I hardly remember what its like to have him home for long periods of time. He?s been home for more than a week at a time a few times, but always working long hard hours (except when he ended up in the hospital last August) that kept him gone almost as much as if he weren?t home at all. I?m thankful that he will be here close by for quite awhile to help me with the things that still need to be done like turning my craft room into a nursery and all the other heavy lifting that I haven?t really been able to do for the last couple of weeks. Most of all I?m thankful to have my partner and best friend home with me when I need him most for emotional support. Its hard only talking to him for 15 or 20 minutes, at most, 2 or 3 times a day. That?s often the only contact we have when he?s working like he is now and it makes me appreciate the time I do have with him so much more than I might otherwise.

This is getting long and pathetic so I?m going to quit while I?m not too far behind. I need to make a run to the store to buy more needles for my serger since I managed to snap the one that was on there and then I need to find some basic canning essentials because I picked 32 lbs of peaches yesterday with my mother in law and I need to do something with them ASAP.

Violence tops debate ahead of Venezuela vote

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Natalia Guzman stepped hesitantly into the morgue looking for her only son. She was led to rows of refrigeration units, where after peering at more than a dozen corpses she finally found 17-year-old Jaime.

Trembling and in tears, she embraced relatives outside the building and said her son's body had been riddled with bullets. She blamed a drug-dealing gang in her slum for the killing and complained that police might have prevented it had they been patrolling her neighborhood.

The rising tide of violent crime that has engulfed Venezuela has become a top issue in the country's presidential campaign, with opposition candidate Henrique Capriles blaming President Hugo Chavez's government for failing to halt the bloodshed. Yet Guzman and many other Venezuelans appear to have lost faith in the ability of any government as well as the police to address the problem, no matter who wins the October vote.

"Crime is out of control, and I don't think any politician, neither Chavez, nor Capriles, is going to change that," Guzman said, speaking in a low voice that at times cracked when she cried.

The government says more than 14,000 people were killed in Venezuela last year, giving the country a murder rate of 50 per 100,000 people and making it one of the most violent countries in Latin America and the world. The murder rate has more than doubled since 1998, when Chavez was first elected.

At campaign rallies, Capriles has been promising to fix what he calls one of Chavez's most glaring failures, declaring: "We will have to choose between life or death."

Chavez has responded by banning gun sales, expanding a new national police force and launching an anti-crime plan with stepped-up policing and other programs in high-crime areas.

It's unclear how the political tug-of-war on crime may affect the race. But Chavez's opponents are hammering away on the issue, convinced that some voters will be swayed.

Capriles' campaign manager, Leopoldo Lopez, said as he presented the opposition's "Security for All" anti-crime plan that nearly 14 years after Chavez was first elected, the president's promises are too little, too late. "He's never made the issue of security a priority, until now when he tries to use it as a political banner," Lopez said.

Experts say violent crime has increased in the country due to easy, cheap access to guns, a culture of violence among young men in the slums, and severe shortages of police officers and prosecutors.

Criminologist Fermin Marmol Garcia said Venezuela's fundamental problem is that for more than a decade, "the institutions that weigh heavily on crime prevention and suppression were not strengthened."

In polls, Venezuelans consistently rate violent crime as their top concern. But many tend to blame long-standing institutional problems such as police forces viewed as corrupt and incapable, rather than pointing fingers at politicians.

"For Capriles, the challenge is putting the issue on the pedestal, linking it directly to Chavez, showing that he's responsible and creating hope that it's possible to solve the problem," said Luis Vicente Leon, a Caracas-based pollster and political analyst. He said Capriles, who has been trailing in the polls, hasn't yet been able to gain traction on the issue.

Guzman isn't committed to either presidential candidate, and so far Capriles' anti-crime message hasn't resonated with her.

She said her son's motorcycle was stolen when he was killed after a street party, and she suspects the gunmen who killed him are the same toughs who terrorize her neighborhood.

"The police are almost never around when there's a problem. They always arrive hours afterward and they never capture anybody," Guzman said. "It's the thugs, not the police, who control the neighborhoods."

The authorities say a majority of the country's killings involve young men, often battling in poor neighborhoods over turf or drug dealing, or in simple rivalries. Crime has also been expanding into places once seen as safe, such as movie theaters, shopping malls and parking garages where security guards stand watch.

Shooting victims are often brought to the Perez de Leon Hospital near Petare, Venezuela's largest slum, where Guzman's son was gunned down. At the hospital, janitors mop blood from the white tile floor while doctors scramble to save lives. The victims' friends and relatives anxiously wait outside the emergency ward.

Abductions for ransom have grown rapidly in the past decade, with kidnapping reported to police rising from 52 in 1998, when Chavez was first elected, to 618 in 2009. Security experts say the real number of kidnappings is much higher because most cases aren't reported to authorities.

Recently diplomats from Costa Rica, Mexico and Chile were kidnapped, and all were eventually freed after ordeals lasting from two hours to more than a day.

Among the middle and upper classes, growing numbers of Venezuelans have been trying to take their security into their own hands by enrolling in self-defense courses, hiring bodyguards or bulletproofing their vehicles.

"Business has multiplied," said Ernesto Carrera, director of the School of Personal Protection, which offers intensive self-defense courses. He said his clientele has grown by about 80 percent in the past five years.

Jose Berrios, a 34-year-old businessman, decided to enroll after surviving an armed robbery, and now spends three nights a week at the school learning self-defense techniques and struggling through exercise sessions that include tossing medicine balls, doing pull-ups and lifting weights.

In one training session, an instructor demonstrated how to avoid a carjacking by using a martial arts move to disarm an attacker.

Capriles has been trying to capitalize on Venezuelans' concerns by accusing Chavez of ignoring the issue for most of his presidency. He has promised to take a different approach and make crime-fighting a top priority, laying out a plan that includes putting more police on the streets, raising officers' salaries and bringing more sports and art programs to poor neighborhoods.

Chavez responded by launching his latest anti-crime program last week, dubbed the "Great Mission For Every Life Venezuela." It includes allocating more money to expand training programs for police, starting community programs for troubled youth, expanding a fledgling national police force and targeting law enforcement resources to high-crime areas.

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said the country now has about 92,000 police officers in a patchwork of state, local and national police force but acknowledged Venezuela would need about 20,000 more police officers to meet U.N. standards. This September, El Aissami said, about 9,500 new recruits are scheduled to join the Bolivarian National Police after they undergo training.

El Aissami said that the challenge of combatting violence goes beyond hiring more police and building more prisons. Part of the government's program, he said, focuses on giving young men in the slums alternatives through sports and community programs so that they no longer view "a pistol and a motorcycle" as status symbols.

El Aissami told reporters last week that crime "is the most serious problem, the one of greatest concern and the one of greatest attention for the government."

Pets and More Pets ? Horse Vitamin And A Few Of The Types Of ...

A great horse vitamin is perfect for your horse especially to battle off undesired viruses as well as parasites. All mounts have internal parasites. Ninety percent of all the colic cases might be linked to circulatory damage brought on by the switching larvae of Strongylus vulgaris (blood worms). 50 percent of the deaths in mounts may be related to internal parasites. Internal parasites have modified themselves to the internal environment of their host animal and have come to be host-specific. Horse parasites can simply occur in horses and cattle parasites only in cattle. In case a cow takes the eggs or larvae of the horse parasite (or the other way around), the life cycle of the parasite is destroyed. This can be a component in creating parasite control applications.

Bots (gasterophilus) are the larvae of botflies. The yellow eggs are set about the hairs on the front part of the horse, within just reach of his tongue. The eggs hatch in 10-14 days and also the horse will lick them off his coat and transfer these to his mouth, where the larvae burrow into the mucous membranes of the lips as well as gums. There they continue to be for a short increasing period and they pass on to the intestine where they attach to the stomach wall. They stay there for pretty much a year just before passing out with the faeces to pupate inside the soil. Adult botflies then appear coming from the pupal cases in 3 to 9 weeks, based on the temperature.

It is often thought that tapeworms don?t cause a lot of injury to horses, but just lately they are becoming looked over more closely. Tapeworms adhere to the intestine at the junction between the little intestine and cecum. This can be already a possible section of impaction within the horse, which is considered by some that tapeworm pests compounds the problem. Regrettably tapeworm eggs do not show up on routine fecal exams, therefore if normal deworming isn?t resulting in thriftiness, think about providing pyrantel at 2-3 times the normal dose; this will eliminate any tapeworms.

Administration applications which disrupt the life cycle of the parasite just before invasion occurs would be the answer to prosperous control. Keeping stall areas thoroughly clean is vital. Manure must be removed and put into a compost pile or distributed on cropland or pastures not being grazed by mounts. The larvae in composted manure will be ruined if sufficient heat is built up. Distributing manure by hauling pastures will reduce likelihood of infective larvae if the local weather provides for drying of manure. Substitute grazing with ruminants and pasture rotation techniques will help with disrupting the parasite life cycle. Grazing ruminants in rotation with horses will reduce parasite infestation since most internal parasites are host specific. Pasture rotation may also help by reducing chance of overgrazing, thus minimizing ingestion of unwanted organisms.

An excellent horse vitamin is perfect for your horse?s health. Sensible horse owners worm their equine, seasonally (4 times a year) and on well handled pasture substantial worm burdens are not an issue. A choice of wormer is often produced on the basis of advertising or cost. No real follow up is taken up to decide if the wormer was successful, the owner trusts the merchandise was effective. Usually the wormer used, is one to which the worms have become resistant. Therefore, you will need to not only worm your horse but to adhere to deworming using a faecal egg worm count, in Spring as well as Winter.

Panic as cops kill cops at Mexico City airport

Travelers run for cover as federal officers are killed by cops suspected of drug trafficking. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

By msnbc.com news services

MEXICO CITY -- Three policemen died in a shootout with two other officers suspected of drug trafficking at Mexico City's airport on Monday, as panicked travelers scrambled for cover in the busy facility.

The shootout occurred when three federal officers approached the two suspects in the airport's Terminal 2, which handles international and domestic flights. Two agents were killed at the terminal and another later died of his injuries in hospital.

More than a dozen shots were heard, Milenio Television reported. Television footage showed a body lying on the floor of the terminal in what appeared to be a publicly accessible area of the airport.

Three shots rang out at first, witness Israel Lopez, a 23-year-old Mexico City student who had gone to the airport to see off a friend, told The Associated Press. Lopez didn't see who those shots were directed at, but then the gunfire came closer.

Federal Police officers stand guard at an entrance near the fast-food area of Benito Juarez international airport Terminal 2, in Mexico City, where two police officers were shot dead and a third was wounded on Monday. Airport spokesman Jorge Andres Gomez said authorities are going through the security cameras to know the exact events of the shooting.

"We were in the food court, and some policemen came in and started shooting at another policeman who was on the floor," Lopez told the AP. "We dove to the floor and covered ourselves with chairs."

Lopez said the shooters wore blue uniforms like those of federal police who provide security at the airport. He said the shooters then ran to the parking area "as if they were pursuing somebody," and he lost sight of them.

'One of the safest places'
Robert Gray, an evangelical missionary from Hart, Michigan, but who has lived with his family in the city of Puebla for the past four years, arrived at the airport after the shooting with his wife, two daughters and son to catch a flight back to the U.S. to visit family.

"It's surprising to see it happening at the airport. It's one of the safest places in the city," Gray told the AP.

The suspects, who remain at large, are believed to be part of a larger group of officials involved in a cocaine ring, Mexico's security ministry said in a statement.

"The Federal Police has identified the two officers who opened fire and several investigative units are now focused on capturing them," the federal Public Safety Department said in a statement.

14 mutilated corpses, threat message to drug cartel found in Mexican city

Airport spokesman Jorge Gomez told Milenio that aircraft departures and arrivals continued normally after the incident.

The airport said in a press statement that the terminal and flights were operating normally following what it described as "a dispute in an open-access area." But the food court remained blocked to public access for hours after the shooting.

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion

Mexico City has seen relatively low murder rates compared to the rest of the country, where drug violence has killed around 55,000 people in the past five-and-a-half years.

Severed heads
But attacks have been creeping up in the capital and its surrounding neighborhoods, with more than 300 gangland killings recorded last year.

Mexico's airports and ports are busy areas for drug smugglers. So far this year federal police have seized more than 440 pounds of cocaine at the capital's airport, double the amount taken there last year.

A passenger speaks on her cellphone at Benito Juarez international airport Terminal 2, in Mexico City, where two police officers were shot dead and a third was wounded on Monday.

In 2007, the severed heads of three employees of a customs brokerage firm were found near the airport and in the nearby state of Mexico.

The decapitations were apparently retaliation for the seizure of a half-ton of Colombian cocaine at the airport, officials said at the time.

Mexico got wrong man in high-profile drug arrest?

In 2008, federal police chief Edgar Millan was gunned down inside his Mexico City home, and one of the suspects in that killing had worked as an anti-drug officer at the Mexico City airport.

The suspect had a notebook with detailed information on drug trafficking at the airport, and officials said federal investigations into those operations may have been a key motive for Millan's killing.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

EURO 2012 LIVE: England vs. Italy

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? England and Italy are vying for the last semifinal berth at the European Championship ? and the winner will play Germany. Follow all of the action and build-up here. All times are Polish.

___

2058: England seems to be encouraged by that chance from Johnson, with Wayne Rooney breaking away down the left to force a corner. The Italians clear the imminent pressure but the ball is crossed back into the center and, after an unorthodox punch away from Buffon, Parker drills the ball wide from outside the penalty area.

___

2052: And now it's England's turn to go close. England works the ball down the right and Milner delivers a low cross into the penalty area and after a couple of deflections, it lands between the feet of Johnson. The right back eventually gets his shot away and it seems destined for the back of the net from close range but Buffon makes a splendid save, clawing the ball up in the air and catching the rebound.

___

2050: So close! De Rossi sends a left-footed shot on the bounce crashing off the post. The ball is pulled back to the midfield man who, with the outside of his boot, sends a shot swerving onto the face of the left post from 25 yards, with an outstretched Hart in the England goal comprehensively beaten. Early letoff for Roy Hodgson's side.
