Visitors to the new Atlantis exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center walk into the building under a big orange external fuel tank like the one the shuttle rode into space.
The tank's a replica ? but the shuttle inside is the real deal.
People who worked on the shuttle program, like retired technician Tom Boarman, are looking forward to reuniting with Atlantis.
"Well it will be a very familiar sight to me," Boarman said. "I've seen it on the pad many times ? all the shuttles."
Inside the hall, the shuttle looks like it's floating, weightless, against the dark walls and ceiling, while a video showing the curve of the earth from space plays behind the towering tail fin.
Astronaut Jim "JR" Reilly took his first spacewalk from Atlantis in 2001. Seeing the display for the first time was emotional for him.
"Because it took me back to that moment where I looked back and there's the earth," Reilly said. "That is a pretty powerful moment, to see the earth and everything you know right there, and it's flying behind Atlantis."
The entrance to the Atlantis exhibit features a replica fuel tank.

John Raoux/APUnlike the other retired orbiters on display in California and Virginia, Atlantis is tilted on an angle. Visitors can see right inside the open cargo bay, with its robotic arm extended, then walk around and look at the belly, where re-entry has scorched the thousands of grey-black thermal tiles.
It's a view Reilly remembers well after returning from space.
"And it would still be hot," he said. "So you could put your hand up next to it and feel the heat radiating from the tiles and from the nose cap after we'd do our walk-around."
Atlantis flew 33 missions, but it was built to fly 100 times, so this museum display is bittersweet for people who worked and flew on the shuttle.
The exhibit includes interactive displays. Visitors can crawl through a miniature model of the international space station, or zip down a slide mimicking the shuttle's landing path.
There was stiff competition among museums for the retired orbiters after the shuttle program ended. But astronaut Reilly says the Kennedy Space Center is the right place for Atlantis.
"Ah, it had to be here. One of them had to be here, because this is where they lived."

After posting a message on his fan page supporting the National Rifle Association, Paula Deen and Jesus Christ, Fox News' Todd Starnes found himself banned from the social media site and his post deleted, Fox News reported Saturday.
"); }?I?m about as politically incorrect as you can get,? Starnes wrote on his Facebook page. ?I?m wearing an NRA ball cap, eating a Chick-fil-A sandwich, reading a Paula Deen cookbook and sipping a 20-ounce sweet tea while sitting in my Cracker Barrel rocking chair with the Gather Vocal Band singing ?Jesus Saves? on the stereo and a Gideon?s Bible in my pocket. Yes sir, I?m politically incorrect and happy as a june bug.?
According to Starnes, the post went viral, generating hundreds of comments.
But Facebook claimed it violated their rules and standards.
?We removed this from Facebook because it violates our Community Standards,? Facebook told Starnes. ?So you?re temporarily blocked from using this feature.?
Starnes said he was perplexed.
?Does Facebook have a bigger problem with Jesus or plump juicy chicken breasts?? he asked.
Facebook not only banned Starnes from posting, the site also prevented him from posting a daily Bible verse called ?Morning Glory ? Start Your Day Inspired.?
But after an outcry from fans and supporters, Facebook lifted the ban and apologized.
"They said one of their staff members 'accidentally' removed the posting," Starnes wrote on his page.
"'Accidentally on purpose', as my grandfather used to say!" one person responded on Facebook. "Glad to be part of this God-fearing, Amercia-loving front porch!!"
A number of other Facebook users expressed support for Starnes and his message.
We reached out to Facebook earlier today for comment, but did not receive a reply.
As Starnes observed, this is not the first time Facebook has punished conservatives for little to no reason. Earlier this year, Facebook punished Florida blogger Diane Sori for a link to a beheading picture she never posted after applying a rule that holds all administrators responsible for what any administrator posts regardless of the circumstances.
Many other conservatives have been punished or banned for much less.
Twitchy noted the irony of Starnes' banning, considering the site permits pages calling for the murder of George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer on trial for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
As a result, over 125,000 have migrated to Tea Party Community, a Facebook-like alternative that gives conservatives a site where they can exercise free expression.
Other sites like Online Fiends and United Patriots have also sprung up, and a Facebook event calls on users to stay off the social media giant on Independence Day.

Most energy audit reports place windows very low on their list of energy improvement priorities. This isn't surprising?because of the relatively high cost of replacement windows?coupled with what are?commonly marginal improvements in their thermal?performance. Since audit reports generally prioritize energy efficiency improvement opportunities according to their cost vs. thermal benefit? (fuel savings) ratio, the energy payback economics?of replacement windows?are notoriously poor across the entire quality/cost spectrum of replacement windows.?This is true because, in order to achieve significant?thermal improvement?with replacement windows one must?invest in the very?expensive triple-glazed units fitted with specialty glass and the fuel savings may not be recouped during the useful life of the window.?
While all of the above mentioned?cost and performance factors may be true, I believe that the?listing of windows as a low priority energy improvement opportunity is fundamentally flawed, often resulting in the audit doing an unintentional disservice to the building owner. This common flaw lies in the mistaken?assumption that, aside from repair and weather-sealing, window 'replacement' is the only meaningful window improvement option. I want to encourage auditors to consider the merit of?many other more affordable and cost-effective?window improvement opportunities.
There is more to window performance than thermal efficiency, but this site is for energy professionals so I will focus most of?this blog on thermal performance. Broadly speaking, there are three ways in which windows can be thermally improved: 1) repair and weather-sealing; 2) supplemental panels and window treatments; and, 3) window replacement. As we've all learned in Energy Efficiency 101, one should undertake (or recommend) the no-cost and low-cost improvements first; and, in the case of windows, the most bang-for-the-buck lies in Category 1: repair and weather-sealing. Many energy conscious building owners will?have already accomplished this with caulking. Category 2: supplemental panels and window treatments?are generally the next most cost-effective category of window improvement measures. These can include:? exterior storm sash, interior thermal shades, heavy curtains, and supplemental insulation panels. Of these options, exterior storms and thermal shades?are most commonly found to be already in place, leaving?supplemental insulation panels as a commonly overlooked but often quite affordable and highly cost-effective window improvement opportunity.
Obviously, there are those situations that demand window replacement for reasons other than thermal efficiency such as, structural integrity; but, if the existing windows are structurally sound, there are several cost effective ways to improve their performance, operation and appearance without resorting to replacement.
Future posts will address both optical and thermal window performance, as well as the human needs and expectations regarding window use, maintenance, operation and appearance.
Post Script:
After?nearly 50 years as an architectural planning and design professional, an HVAC designer, an energy auditor and audit?systems designer, a high-performance building consultant, and a residential general contractor, I?narrowed my focus and sold high quality replacement windows in Northern New England for a year. This experience awakened me to the market's growing need for more affordable and cost-effective alternatives to window replacment. In response, two years ago I established Window Improvement Masters, LLC located in Orford, NH. www.windowimprovementmasters.com www.rjbacondesign.com
Though my current interests (and this blog) are focused on the role of windows in improving occupant comfort?while achieving more?efficient building performance; I recognize that all building systems - both static and dynamic, as well as human?- must work together to satisfy?the myriad needs of the building's?owners and its occupants - and these needs go well beyond thermal efficiency and energy economics.?I, therefore, welcome a discussion with others who appreciate the need for a holistic approach to addressing these inseparable matters of?resource conservation?and energy use in the built environment.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Southwest Airlines expects some lingering delays Saturday morning after a system-wide computer failure caused it to ground 250 flights for nearly three hours late Friday night.
Full service was restored just after 2 a.m. EDT Saturday, but the Dallas-based airline is still working to clear a backlog of flights and reposition planes and crew.
The airline ? the country's largest domestic carrier ? canceled 43 flights Friday night and another 14 Saturday morning.
Southwest is the latest airline to ground flights because of a large computer outage. But its problem was minor compared to those experienced by two competitors ? thanks in part to its late-day timing.
In April, American Airlines grounded all of its flights nationwide for several hours due to computer problems. The airline ultimately canceled 970 flights. And last year, United Airlines had two major outages: one in August delayed 580 flights; another in November delayed 636 flights.
The problem was detected around 11 p.m. EDT Friday, Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins said. It impaired the airline's ability to do such things as conduct check-ins, print boarding passes and monitor the weight of each aircraft. Some flights were on the taxiway and diverted back to the terminal, Hawkins said. Flights already in the air were unaffected.
Most of Southwest's cancelations Friday night were in the western half of the country, according to airline spokeswoman Michelle Agnew. Saturday's cancelations were scattered across the U.S. They included planes leavings from Minneapolis, Chicago, Phoenix, Denver and San Diego, according to flight tracking service FlightAware.
Southwest flies an average of 3,400 flights each day.
Agnew said in an email Saturday morning that the airline's technology team is "still working to confirm the source of the issue."
Shortly after 2 a.m., Southwest posted on its Twitter page that "systems are operating and we will begin work to get customers where they need to be. Thanks for your patience tonight."
Agnew said the computer system was "running at full capacity" by early Saturday. Before that, though, officials used a backup system that was much more sluggish.

ABC News' Michael Falcone reports:
For a Senate race without an opposing candidate, there sure are a lot of television ads flying back and forth in Kentucky these days.
After two Democratic groups unleashed a volley of TV commercials this week attacking Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who is up for re-election in 2014, the Senate Minority Leader is about to get a little help from his friends.
Namely, from an outside group called Kentuckians for Strong Leadership, a pro-McConnell super PAC that is planning to release a flight of ads next week to combat the latest Democratic assault.
According to a strategist with the group, Kentuckians for Strong Leadership is spending $260,000 on the ads, which will run on broadcast and cable in the state. That's roughly $10,000 more than what two Democratic groups, the Senate Majority PAC and an allied organization, Patriot Voices USA, spent on a new ad, unveiled on Thursday, which asks: "How long is too long in Washington?" and features a clip of McConnell saying he's lived on a government salary for three decades.
It's part of the groups' "30 Years Is Too Long" campaign, which promises "paid television and radio media, digital advertisements, mail, telephones, email, social media, research and a web presence" between now and Election Day 2014. (In March, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also paid for a series of anti-McConnell radio ads).
Kentuckians for Strong Leadership's ad won't be released until next week, but a Democratic strategist said news of the effort, "absolutely proves that McConnell knows he's vulnerable."
As far back as February, the McConnell campaign began running online videos, and later a series of television ads, in support of his re-election bid even though he does not yet have a viable Democratic opponent.
Ever since actress Ashley Judd passed on the race, all eyes have been on Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes as the most likely potential challenger but she has not announced her intentions.
The latest ad buys highlight the critical role outside groups are sure to play in marquee races across the country during the coming midterm election cycle as well as the millions that will likely be spent on both sides in the Kentucky Senate contest (assuming that elusive viable challenger to McConnell eventually emerges).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Royals had a runner on third base with one out in the eighth inning and left him there. The Chicago White Sox had the same situation in the ninth and brought him home.
That about summed up their game on Saturday.
The White Sox eked out a 3-2 victory when ace reliever Jesse Crain shut down the Royals in a shaky eighth inning, and Alejandro De Aza provided his timely sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Jordan Danks from third base in the top of the ninth.
"We both had the same situation late - had the winning run on third base - and they executed and we didn't," Royals manager Ned Yost said.
It wasn't quite that simple, of course.
Eric Hosmer hit a long fly to right field in the ninth that fell for a triple thanks in part to some miscommunication in the White Sox outfield. But Crain (2-1) calmly got Salvador Perez to pop out and then struck out Lorenzo Cain for his 29th consecutive scoreless appearance.
That kept the game tied going to the ninth inning.
Dayan Viciedo led off with a single against Aaron Crow (3-3), and Jeff Keppinger drew a walk to reach base for the fourth time. Yost brought in closer Greg Holland, and he got pinch-hitter Gordon Beckham to fly out to center field. But that allowed Danks - who was running for Viciedo - to reach third base with one out.
De Aza laid off a couple of pitches out of the zone before ripping a fly ball to right field that was just deep enough to allow Danks to slide home ahead of the throw.
"I was trying to get a pitch that I could make some contact and drive that run in," De Aza said. "The hitters in front me, they all did their job and gave me a chance to drive one in."
Keppinger and Conor Gillaspie also drove in runs for the White Sox, who have taken the first two games in the three-game set after starting 1-6 on their 10-game road trip.
"It seems like we're always on the losing end of one-run games, so fundamentally to get a sac fly to get the winning run, it's a good feeling," Keppinger said. "Hopefully we can build off it."
The Royals, meanwhile, have dropped four straight since climbing back to .500.
"We're all scratching our heads," Yost said. "The consistency of our offense has been a little bit mind-boggling. It's getting them to stay relaxed in situations."
Kansas City (34-38) is 11-33 when scoring three runs or fewer this season.
"It's baseball, man. It's a hard game," the Royals' Mike Moustakas said. "Sometimes you get the job done, sometimes you don't get it done, and that's just kind of how it turns out."
The Royals struck first when Miguel Tejada, starting at second base for the ninth time in his 16-year career, hit a two-out single in the second inning. The 39-year-old then chugged all the way around on a double by Moustakas to give Kansas City the early lead.
It was the first RBI for Moustakas since May 23.
The White Sox threatened in the third when Keppinger singled and Tyler Flowers walked to start the inning. Alex Rios hit a ball down the right-field line that fell foul by just a couple of feet, and then he struck out looking to keep the White Sox off the scoreboard.
At least until the fourth.
Dunn, who was hitting .186 coming into the game, walked leading off the inning. Paul Konerko followed with a single up the middle, and Gillaspie's slow roller up the middle was enough to drive in Dunn with the tying run.
Wade Davis nearly escaped the inning when he got Viciedo to ground into a double play, but Keppinger delivered a single to right that gave the White Sox a 2-1 lead.
Kansas City was poised for a big sixth inning, tying the game on a single by Perez and putting runners on first and second with one out. But reliever Matt Lindstrom entered the game and got Lorenzo Cain to ground into a double play on his first pitch to end the threat.
White Sox starter Jose Quintana wound up going 5 1-3 innings, while Davis made it through seven innings on the warm afternoon. He also gave up two runs for the Royals.
"Tough loss," Davis said, "having a tie game in the ninth inning."
NOTES: Keppinger started at 2B in place of Beckham and finished 3 for 3. ... The Royals activated OF Jarrod Dyson (right high ankle sprain) from the DL and optioned 2B Chris Getz to Triple-A Omaha. ... RHP Dylan Axelrod goes to the mound for the White Sox in Sunday's series finale. RHP James Shields starts for Kansas City.
