Teachers say plagiarism, informality are byproducts of digital influence on writing?

Rosa Golijan / NBC News

Most writing teachers believe that digital tools ? from wikis to whiteboards ? make it easier to teach writing, but say they worry about plagiarism and informality in their students' work, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center?s Internet & American Life Project.

More than 2,400 Advanced Placement (AP) and National Writing Project (NWP) middle- and high-school teachers were asked about the use of digital tools including interactive whiteboards, wikis, websites, blogs, and collaborative Web-based tools (such as Google Docs) as sources of help for writing.

"In addition to giving students low ratings on their understanding of fair use and copyright, a majority of AP and NWP teachers also say students are not performing well when it comes to 'appropriately citing and/or referencing content' in their work," the study found.

"This is fairly common concern among the teachers in the study, who note how easy it is for students today to copy and paste others? work into their own and how difficult it often is to determine the actual source of much of the content they find online."

Those issues have become so important that 88 percent of the teachers said they spend class time talking to students about the concepts of "citation and plagiarism," while 75 percent make sure they talk about the notions of fair use and copyright with their students.

While 50 percent of teachers responded that they believe digital tools make it easier to teach writing, 18 percent are under the impression that such things make the process more difficult, according to the survey.

Teachers also said they view social network sites, cellphones and texting as "generally" helping teens with personal expression and creativity. But they also note the influences of those digital tools in the "creep" of informal style into formal writing assignments.

Sixty-eight percent of the teachers surveyed said that digital tools make students more likely to "take shortcuts and put no effort into their writing," 46 percent suggested that students are more likely to "write too fast and be careless," and 30 percent described their students ability to navigate fair use and copyright issues as "poor."

Only 15 percent of teachers said that their students were "excellent" or "very good" about appropriately citing content. (37 percent responded that their students were "fair" about the process, while 20 percent said their students' tendency to cite material appropriately was "poor.")

It's not all bad news though: 50 percent of surveyed teachers believe that digital tools actually make it easier to teach writing.

"Teachers do have concerns that digital tools are blurring the lines between formal and informal writing and see writing skills that need improvement," Kristen Purcell, associate director for research at the Pew Internet Project, points out, "but they also see the benefit of students having more people respond to their writing and the increased opportunities for expression these digital tools offer."

Tuesday wrap: GOP thankful for tax reform

Posted: 7:19 p.m. today

On the day designated as "Thankful Tuesday" by supporters of the Republican legislative agenda, the House and Senate both gave tentative approval to a tax reform package that top lawmakers and Gov. Pat McCrory unveiled less than a day earlier.

The House also gave final approval to a bill shifting control of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport from the city to a regional authority. But a months-long effort to address issues involving people in the U.S. illegally fizzled amid objections from the left and right, and it was moved to a study committee.

Meanwhile, the Senate referred a sweeping regulatory reform bill and a bill containing a proposed constitutional amendment on eminent domain to committees for further review.

Country singer Randy Travis faces long recovery after stroke -doctors

By Marice Richter

DALLAS (Reuters) - U.S. country music singer Randy Travis' condition has stabilized after emergency surgery last week to relieve pressure on his brain following a stroke, but it may take months for the Grammy winner to recover, doctors said on Monday.

Travis, 54, who was admitted to a hospital north of Dallas on July 7 for a heart condition caused by a virus, suffered a stroke and underwent surgery on Wednesday.

"He is awake and alert and interacting with his family and friends and beginning to start doing some early physical therapy," Dr. Gary Erwin, a pulmonologist at the hospital, said in a video conference for the Dallas-based Baylor Health Care System, where Travis underwent surgery.

Travis' condition is critical but stable.

"We anticipate it will take months to recover from the stroke," Erwin added.

Travis suffers from a chronic condition known as idiopathic cardiomyopathy, a scarring of his heart muscle that causes his heart to be weak and makes it difficult for it to pump, said Dr. Michael Mack, a heart surgeon and the medical director of cardiovascular disease for Baylor Health Care System.

Travis suffered an acute viral illness over the past three weeks that appeared to have exacerbated the cardiomyopathy, Mack said, adding that Travis has a family history of cardiomyopathy.

A biopsy of his heart muscle showed scar tissue and images of his heart showed the condition does not have the appearance of being caused by drugs or alcohol, doctors said.

Travis, who lives about 60 miles north of Dallas in Tioga, Texas, initially was put on life support for a heart condition that was presumed to be cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure, Mack said.

Doctors weaned him off life support for his heart, but he suffered a stroke Wednesday evening, Mack said.

Erwin said doctors hoped soon to remove Travis from a ventilator that is aiding his breathing. They are slowly decreasing his need for intravenous medications for his heart as well, he said.

Travis is expected to stay in the hospital for several more weeks and then will be transferred to a rehabilitation facility for "aggressive physical therapy," Erwin said.

Travis' fianc?e, Mary Davis, said the singer feels the care of his doctors and nurses and the love of his fans and thanked everyone for their continued support.

"He is responding well to voices and he sees and he understands. He is miles beyond where any of us thought he would be a few days ago," Davis said in the video conference.

The singer-songwriter known for hits such as "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses" has been in the spotlight in the past year due to legal troubles.

Travis was arrested after Texas State Troopers found him lying near his crashed car almost a year ago. He pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to serve 30 days at an in-patient alcohol treatment facility.

Hundreds protest Israeli Bedouin resettlement plan

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Hundreds of protesters have staged demonstrations in Israel against a plan to resettle nomadic Bedouin Arabs in the southern Negev desert.

Arab rights groups called the protests. They are fighting a bill that would move thousands of Bedouins into government-recognized villages. Bedouins charge that the plan would confiscate their land and destroy their way of life. Israel says the moves are necessary to provide basic services that many Bedouins lack.

The largest demonstration Monday was in the southern city of Beersheba. Police say some 700 people protested, scuffling with police, and 14 were arrested after a group of protesters blocked a road.

Also, police say eight demonstrators were arrested at a demonstration in northern Israel after protesters threw rocks at police.

Three officers were injured.

Foodies show up at California State Fair

SACRAMENTO, CA - High calorie counts are not enough to keep people away from fair food.

The California State Fair is all about fun, but it's also about food for many.

"Oh yeah! Every year we come for the food, every year," Jerry Meza said. "We've been coming for 12 years!"

Funnel cakes, footlongs and French fries put a smile on foodies' faces, both big and small.

"I'm starting off with the ceviche, then I'm going to build my way up to the heavy cholesterol and fried things," said a man from San Diego.

Although California restaurants are required to post health information on their menus, food vendors in places like the state fair are not.

"Our menu labeling laws that went into affect a few years ago were for our fixed-facility chain restaurants and they did not affect the temporary booths such as these," Sacramento County Supervising Environmental Specialist Zarha Ruiz said.

Some of the calorie counts, according to Web MD:

  • Fried candy bars - 444 calories
  • Funnel cakes - 760 calories
  • Giant turkey legs - 1,136 calories

There are some healthy food options at the state fair, but you just have to keep your eyes open.

Fair goers can opt for grilled veggies instead of fried in some places or keep off some fatty condiments.

No matter what you choose to eat at the fair, experts said it's all about enjoying everything in moderation.

Suspected militants killed in Pakistan drone strike

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - At least two suspected foreign militants were killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's volatile border region of North Waziristan, local officials said on Sunday.

Drones armed with missiles have inflicted the most damage against Taliban fighters in Pakistan's lawless tribal areas straddling the Afghan border over the past seven years, sometimes with heavy civilian casualties.

In the third drone attack since Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took office last month, two people riding a motorcycle were struck by missiles in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan on Saturday night, one official said.

"The two men, probably Arab nationals, were passing through Mosaki village when the drone fired two missiles and hit them," said the official.

Their identities were not immediately known. The official in Mir Ali said they were Arabs, but another security source in the region told Reuters they were foreign militants of Turkmen origin.

U.S. drone attacks began in Pakistan in 2004. It has been difficult to check their impact on both militants and civilians because independent observers and journalists have almost no access to the areas where most of the strikes occur.

Pakistani Taliban fighters, who operate as a separate entity but are allied with their Afghan counterparts, often seal off the sites of drone strikes immediately.

Pakistan's government has denounced the attacks as a violation of its sovereignty. U.S. President Barack Obama has promised to scale them back, resorting to them only when a threat was "continuing and imminent".

Fox Sports: Report: Henderson had prior run-ins

Updated?Jul 13, 2013 5:23 AM ET

?

According to a report, Mississippi guard Marshall Henderson's recent traffic stop in which he was found in possession of marijuana and cocaine was not his first brush with law enforcement.

In the weeks prior to the May 4 incident that came to light on Thursday, Henderson had two previous run-ins with police in Oxford, Miss., in April, according to USA Today.

Police reports obtained by USA Today detailed one instance on April 27 when Oxford Police pulled Henderson over for playing loud music and not wearing a seat belt. The report said the officer threatened to take Henderson to jail when, after receiving citations, he turned his music up just as loud as he pulled away.

In a previous incident on April 4, Oxford Police responded to a noise complaint, according to the report. When he knocked on the door, Henderson answered and identified himself to the officer. The report said the officer left after Henderson said he would turn the music down.

Henderson was suspended indefinitely by Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy for a "violation of team rules."

Henderson led Ole Miss to a Southeastern Conference tournament title and a berth in the NCAA tournament after leading the SEC in scoring, averaging 20.1 points a game.

Napolitano leaving Homeland Security to head University of California

WASHINGTON Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, who was only the third person to head the sprawling department created to safeguard the country from threats ranging from natural disasters to terrorism, will leave the government to head the University of California system.

A former governor of border state Arizona, Napolitano, 55, joined Obama?s Cabinet at the start of his administration and was a key player throughout. At one point, she was considered a possible pick for the Supreme Court, and she helped carry out Obama administration policies that drew criticism from immigration advocates who said they deported too many and lawmakers who said they didn?t go far enough.

Her departure at the end of the summer comes as Obama tries to move a sweeping overhaul of immigration laws through a Congress at odds over how to deal with the estimated 11 million people who are in the country illegally.

Names of possible successors began floating within hours of her announcement. New York Sen. Charles Schumer called White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough to make a pitch for New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, saying, ?We need someone just as good who can fill (Napolitano?s) shoes.?

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney declined to speculate on any candidates and said Obama would be ?very deliberate? in making a choice.

Obama said Friday that he relied on Napolitano?s judgment and advice and also came to ?value her friendship.? He lauded her work, saying her portfolio had included "some of the toughest challenges facing our country." He said she had worked ?around the clock? to respond to natural disasters and helped secure the country against terrorist attacks.

?Since day one,? he said, ?Janet has led my administration?s effort to secure our borders, deploying a historic number of resources, while also taking steps to make our immigration system fairer and more consistent with our values.?

Napolitano called her four years at Homeland Security "the highlight of my professional career? and said the department had minimized ?threats of all kinds to the American public."

She said the agency had improved the safety of travelers and took ?smart steps that make our immigration system more fair and focused while deploying record resources to protect our nation?s borders.?

In addition to being mentioned as a potential Obama Supreme Court choice, Napolitano was considered a potential second term replacement to replace embattled Attorney General Eric Holder, who decided to stay on the job.

Napolitano had her share of critics among immigration advocates and those who want more aggressive border enforcement, but she never became a partisan lightning rod for the administration. Republican Sen. John McCain said his fellow Arizonan had served ?with honor? in ?one of the toughest and most thankless jobs in Washington.?

McCain said the two had had disagreements but that he never ?doubted her integrity, work ethic or commitment to our nation?s security.?

Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, praised Napolitano?s work but said her pending departure added to a ?growing list of unfilled key leadership positions within the department.?

The head of the department?s crucial Immigration and Customs Enforcement, John Morton, previously announced plans to step down at the end of July.

Immigrant rights groups gave Napolitano mixed reviews for her tenure. They praised her for supporting a pathway to citizenship for those without documents and with helping with Obama?s decision in 2012 to grant temporary relief from deportation to young immigrants who arrived in the U.S. illegally.

The agency also began a policy using prosecutorial discretion to focus on immigrants who posed a threat to public safety, national and border security.

But deportations increased to record numbers under her tenure ?and countless families have been torn apart as a result,? the Fair Immigration Reform Movement said.

Napolitano made the department ? created to marshal widespread security agencies under one roof after the 2001 terrorist attacks _ into a ?stronger, more focused and more effective agency,? said David Schanzer, a former Democratic staff director of the House Select Committee on Homeland Security and director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security at Duke University and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Napolitano was the first woman to head the security agency, following Secretaries Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff. Also, James Loy served as acting secretary for two weeks in 2005.

Schanzer said Napolitano?s greatest achievements were ?tougher enforcement of the southern border and targeting internal immigration enforcement on illegal immigrants who pose the greatest threat, and away from innocent young people who were brought here by their parents.?

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said Napolitano?s support for immigration reform, ?particularly the bipartisan Senate bill, aided its strong 68-vote passage in the Senate.?

Napolitano will be the first woman to lead the 10-campus University of California system. Though she?s not an academic and ?some may consider her to be an unconventional choice,? Sherry Lansing, a University of California regent, called her ?without a doubt the right person at the right time to lead this incredible university.?

Lansing, a former movie executive and chair of the university?s presidential selection committee, said Napolitano "rose to the top" among some 300 potential candidates considered.

?She will bring fresh eyes and a new sensibility _ not only to UC, but to all of California," Lansing said.

Michael Doyle of the Washington Bureau contributed to this report.

(AP) ? About a dozen Russian human rights activists, lawyers and political figures were ushered into a section of Moscow's Sheremetyevo international airport on Friday to meet with Edward Snowden, the leaker of U.S. National Security Agency secrets.

Snowden is believed to have been stuck in the airport's transit zone since arriving from Hong Kong on June 23, as he negotiates for asylum in another country.

The activists included Sergei Nikitin, head of Amnesty International's Russia office, and Tatiana Lokshina, deputy head of the Russian office of Human Rights Watch. Also taken into the meeting room were Russia's presidential human rights ombudsman Vladimir Lukin, prominent attorney Genri Reznik, and Vyacheslav Nikonov, head of the Russian parliament's education committee.

They came after an email in Snowden's name was sent on Thursday. On Facebook, Lokshina posted the text of the email, which says in part that Snowden wants to make "a brief statement and discussion regarding the next steps forward in my situation."

Hundreds of journalists flocked to the airport, but were kept in a hallway outside the meeting area which is behind a gray door marked "staff only." It was not clear if Snowden would have to come out that door or if he could exit by another route.

The text of the invitation does not directly address the offers of asylum that Snowden has received from Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua, though it expresses gratitude for asylum offers and says "I hope to travel to each of them." It accuses the United States of "an unlawful campaign ... to deny my right to seek and enjoy this asylum."

Reznik said before the meeting that he expected Snowden called for it in order to seek asylum in Russia.

Snowden made an earlier application for Russian asylum. But Russian President Vladimir Putin said asylum would be conditional on Snowden stopping leaking U.S. secrets; Snowden then withdrew his asylum bid, Russian officials said.

How much the human rights organizations could influence a Russian asylum bid or other aspects of Snowden's dilemma is unclear. Putin takes a dim view of non-governmental organizations' involvement in political matters.

But an appeal by Snowden to internationally respected groups could boost his status and give Russia a pretext for reconsidering asylum.

Snowden has not been seen in public since arriving in Moscow from Hong Kong, where he had fled before his leaks about American Internet surveillance were made public. Russia has said it cannot extradite him because by remaining in the transit zone he is technically outside Russian territory.

Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia have said they would be willing to grant asylum to Snowden. But it is unclear if Snowden could fly from Moscow to any of those countries without passing through the airspace of the United States or allied countries.

Virus-hit Saudi Arabia asks pilgrims to wear masks

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi Arabia, the epicenter of a new respiratory virus, asked Friday that pilgrims coming from across the Muslim world to visit its holy sites wear face masks in crowded places.

The list of Health Ministry recommendations carried by the Saudi Press Agency also advised the elderly, or those with chronic diseases, to postpone their pilgrimage.

The main pilgrimage season comes later this year but hundreds of thousands also visit the kingdom during the holy month of Ramadan, which began this week.

Saudi Arabia announced two deaths on Sunday, bringing to 38 the number of deadly cases in the kingdom.

The new virus is related to SARS, which killed some 800 people in a global outbreak in 2003. It belongs to a family of viruses that most often cause the common cold.

Trellis Earth Products brings close to 200 jobs to Rochester

Posted at: 07/11/2013 5:08 PM | Updated at: 07/11/2013 6:18 PM

Close to 200 jobs are coming from China to Rochester thanks to a company called Trellis Earth Products.

Trellis is investing over $8 million in the move to Rochester Technology Park, a former Kodak building in Gates. It plans to be up and running by April of next year.

The company, part of the bioplastics industry, makes sustainable food service products for school districts and grocery stores.

News10NBC spoke with the CEO, Mike Senzaki. He says production costs in China had gone up 20%, so the move came down to dollars and cents. They saw the new ads New York State is running to entice businesses here and one of their board members had already done a deal with the state. So they made a visit to Rochester and were impressed by what they found.

Senzaki said, "The Rochester Technology Park, being a former Kodak plant, had all the auxiliary equipment like the air system. The power distribution and the water system. It really is a turnkey operation, saving us a couple million dollars in set-up."

Trellis Earth Products is getting incentives from Empire State Development, including $1.5 million in tax breaks. Monroe County is providing resources too.

Senzaki says recruitment will start in about 30 days with job postings. They'll initially hire 50 to 60 people, and long term, they're looking for manufacturing production line workers, supervisors and sales people. They plan to have the plant up and running by April of next year.

Nigerian president in China to finalize loan deals

BEIJING (AP) ? Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and Chinese President Xi Jinping presided Wednesday over the signing of accords between their governments to facilitate $1.1 billion in low-interest loans for much-needed infrastructure in Nigeria.

China, which is increasingly looking to Africa for oil and other natural resources, is offering Nigeria loans to help fund airport terminals in four cities, roads, a light-rail line for its capital, a hydropower plant and oil and gas infrastructure.

Jonathan, on a four-day trip to China, has brought along about a dozen of his Cabinet ministers including those for petroleum resources, trade and transport, as well as several state governors, senior government officials and businesspeople.

Following a meeting between Xi and Jonathan, representatives from both countries signed five deals, including a lending agreement between China's Import-Export Bank and the Nigerian finance ministry for the expansion of the airport terminals and an economic and technical cooperation pact. Details of the agreements were not immediately available.

Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says the loans being finalized during this trip are part of $3 billion approved by China at interest rates of less than 3 percent.

Chinese companies are already building roads across Nigeria in contracts worth $1.7 billion.

China's demand for crude oil produced in Nigeria is expected to rise tenfold to 200,000 barrels a day by 2015, according to information provided by a team accompanying the Nigerian president.

Zhang Chun, an expert on Africa at the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Studies, said Nigeria is important to China because it has the largest economy in west Africa and because it has oil. "There is great potential for developing cooperation in this field," he said.

On Thursday, Jonathan will meet Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and representatives of companies including state oil company Sinopec and telecom equipment makers Huawei and ZTE.

Internet Marketing's Best Tips For Today | Content for Reprint

A great way to increase your business profits is through Internet marketing. No other marketing venue gives you access to so many people. However, in order to have this access, you have to learn some of the best methods of marketing your business online. Read on for some ideas on getting the most out of your Internet marketing efforts.

Having a mailing list for your clients to join is very important. Consider making it a setting on your webpage that in order for someone to purchase something, they have to use their email address or consider adding a sign- up box. This address can be then used for either sales letters, promotions or seeking feedback on their recent purchasing experience.

Don't put the cart before the horse when it comes to SEO. A good site drives good rankings, not the other way around. This needs to be the first thing anyone does in online business. The easier your site is to navigate and operate, the less tweaking you'll need to do in the future.

Solicit feedback whenever possible. This can be critical to the success of your venture, since others may perceive the looks of your site and the pricing very differently than you perceive them. Ask peers, family members and your potential clients for feedback. Consider the advice they offer you, and use it to tweak your website.

Be mindful that your website tag is highly important and will be used to define your website. A big thing that influences the way people see your website is the tagline at the top of the browser window. Having a bad or confusing tag can make potential customers take off when they might have made a purchase.

You should spend time researching the design basics of website building before starting your own site. There are many online resources that can teach you about key aspects of web design such as HTML and cascading style sheets. Set aside half an hour a day, and you will soon be ready to tackle the design.

Don't overlook direct marketing in conjunction with your Internet marketing. Customers should be contacted through email, phone or fax when trying to let them know about promotions or services. You may find their contact information in the phone book or online, but it's even better if they have trusted you with their numbers so they will not feel like you are spamming them.

Keep detailed records of your statistics. This should include refunds, sales, traffic, referrals and anything else you can think of. By keeping track of these vital statistics, you will be able to plan future changes and additions to your website based on past experience.

An effective way to draw more traffic to your site is by creating a blog. Fresh content is key to maintaining your readers' interest. By updating content regularly on your site, you are given your visitors a reason to keep coming back.

Take advantage of the vast realm of information available online. The internet is forever morphing, it is very useful to keep up with new things and websites so you can put your niche in the public eye.

The use of tools that can make your text stand out are very important when you are setting up the content of your site. Increase the strength of a word or phrase with bold, underlined or italicized text. This allows visitors to instantaneously perceive the content's primary message and to clarify your objective.

If you are using email marketing, you need to rotate links that are included in your correspondence. If you information is redundant you will likely bore your customers instead of encouraging them to purchase products. You can keep the interest of your customers by using a variety of email links.

Incorporating banners in a non-discrete fashion will help to improve your website. If they appear to be links to valuable content, there is a greater chance that the customer will click on them. Banners sometimes can turn away customers, so make sure that they are well placed.

If it seems like a hassle to offer many different payment options, just remember that every one you set up is going to increase your number of sales. Not everyone has credit cards or even a bank account, so offering another option can help increase your sales.

These tips will help to improve the profits, productivity, and sales of your business. Internet marketing is definitely one of the best ways to increase your sales. You should use these tips and strategies and gain customers.

Harvard prof is star witness at WikiLeaks trial

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? A Harvard law professor is taking center stage in the court-martial of an Army private who gave classified information to WikiLeaks.

Yochai Benkler is the star defense witness Wednesday in the trial of Pfc. Bradley Manning at Fort Meade, near Baltimore.

Benkler has praised the anti-secrecy website as a new-media watchdog. He calls the prosecution of Manning part of a broader attack on WikiLeaks aimed at crippling its ability to function.

He says the attack is inconsistent with America's commitment to a free press and free speech.

Manning is charged with aiding the enemy for admittedly sending reams of classified information to WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq.

Manning says he meant to expose wrongdoing. Prosecutors say he knew the material would be seen by al-Qaida.

July 9, 2013 at 9:10 AM by AHN ? ?

Nathan Andrada ? Fourth Estate Cooperative Contributor

Washington, DC, United States (4E) ? Small-business owners? confidence slightly fell in June after reaching its highest level for the year in May, according to a report released Tuesday.

Last month, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Optimism Index fell 0.9 points to 93.5. Six of ten index components fell in June, as U.S. employers became more negative on sales, expansion and inventory growth.

The June reading is in line with the median forecast of economists in a Dow Jones Newswires survey. NFIB cited weak demand as the problem for business owners. The earnings trend subindex for June retreated by 1 percentage point to negative 23 percent.

The weak demand, however, did not stop more small businesses to mark up their prices. In June, the net percentage of owners that raised their selling prices increased 6 points to 8 percent. In a forward-looking June survey, a net 18 percent of owners are likely to increase their prices in the upcoming months, a gain of 3 points from May.

Last month?s survey also showed 11 percent of the employers added an average of 3.6 workers for every business firm over the past several months but 12 percent laid off an average of 4.3 workers. Overall, this resulted to a seasonally adjusted loss of 0.09 workers per business firm.

Honeoye's Leitten is the Daily Messenger's Softball Coach of the Year

The Honeoye softball team continued its reign over the Finger Lakes West League in 2013 with a fourth straight league championship.

?We?ve had a very good group of girls,? coach Matt Leitten said. ?We had six seniors and four first team all-stars, and that was a strong nucleus for us for all those years. That isn?t to take away from the rest of the program; we?ve always had a tradition of working hard and being successful.?

Leitten is the Daily Messenger?s 2013 Softball Coach of the Year.

The Bulldogs remained the top team in the league despite graduating three starters the previous year. Seniors Kylie McBride and Kelsy Cornish both spent five years on the varsity team; classmates Erica Cratsley, Hannah Orman and Taylor Pestle each spent three years on varsity; and Sarah DeGaugh had two years on the team.

McBride dominated opposing hitters and earned the Finger Lakes West?s Player of the Year honor. The senior maintained a 1.94 earned run average with 127 strikeouts in 14 games.

?She?s someone who not only could hit the strike zone with six different pitches, but (she) and Sarah DeGaugh called pitches themselves,? Leitten said. ?She wanted to be in charge, she wanted to be in control.?

Kasey Campbell and Pestle also pitched well for Honeoye.

Cornish, Orman and Cratsley led the Bulldogs offensively, and all three girls were named first team league all-stars. Cornish provided the power with six home runs and Cratsley brought the speed, stealing more than 40 bases and covering a lot of ground in center field.

Honeoye went 4-0 against league opponents Red Jacket and Romulus this season. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 16-5 record, falling to Notre Dame of Batavia in the quarterfinals.

?They were a real pleasure to coach and a real pleasure to be around,? Leitten said. ?We didn?t go as far in sectionals as I had hoped, but that?s the way the game goes sometimes. It?s definitely a group of girls that?s going to be missed. They set such a good example. It give me a chance to coach players up to that level rather than trying to discover what the high watermark is.?

FBI nominee James Comey: Did he ace confirmation hearing?

James Comey, a Republican who served under George W. Bush, told the senators he considered waterboarding torture. The FBI nominee sailed through his confirmation hearing with bipartisan support.

By Peter Grier,?Staff Writer / July 9, 2013

FBI Director nominee James Comey is sworn in on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, July 9, prior to his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Comey spent 15 years as a federal prosecutor before serving in the George W. Bush administration, where he is best known for facing down the White House over a warrantless surveillance program.

It?s true that both men are Republicans who are ? or, in Comey?s case, soon will be ? serving in high Obama administration posts.

But ex-Senator Hagel struggled through his Senate confirmation hearing to be secretary of Defense earlier this year, appearing ill-prepared to answer tough questions he must have known were coming. In contrast, Mr. Comey, Obama?s pick to be the next director of the FBI, sailed through his Senate hearing test Tuesday like an America?s Cup yacht with following winds.

It was clear from the start that Comey?s day would be relatively easy. Sen. Pat Leahy (D) of Vermont, the Judiciary Committtee chairman, has long pushed for the harsh interrogation practice known as waterboarding to be considered torture. Comey, as an official in the George W. Bush administration, objected strongly to the practice.

So Senator Leahy started off with the question on which he knew he and Comey would agree: Is waterboarding torture?

?Yes,? said Comey, flatly.

?Would you agree to answer this question the same way no matter who was president?? Leahy continued.

?Oh certainly,? said Comey.

Following that, other senators of both parties praised Comey?s independence, referring several times to his role in facing down the Bush White House over a warrantless surveillance program.

Comey, meanwhile, agreed in principle with many senators on particular questions, while avoiding committing himself to policy details.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) of California, for instance, asked him what he thought about the force-feeding of prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Comey replied that ?I frankly wouldn?t want [that] done to me,? but noted that that FBI isn?t in charge of Guantanamo and so the question was outside his scope.

?I don?t think it?d be worth much, my opinion, at this point,? he said.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R) of Texas asked Comey whether he was concerned that in the Benghazi, Libya attack and the Boston Marathon bombing the FBI had failed to connect dots of evidence beforehand that might have enabled the US to thwart the plots.

?I don?t know enough from this vantage point, senator, to comment on the particular cases. Obviously I think it?s always important to connect the dots as best you can,? said Comey.

Comey used the word ?transparency? often, saying he saw it as a key value for the FBI, particularly when dealing with Congress. But he also to some extent defended the US government?s collection of vast amounts of its citizens? telephone metadata via National Security Agency snooping.

?As a general matter ? the collection of metadata and analysis of metadata is a valuable tool in counterterrorism,? Comey said.

He also held that the secret court that authorizes NSA surveillance activities is not a ?rubber stamp,? as some critics charge.

?Folks don?t realize it is a group of independent federal judges who sit and review requests by the government, who gather information, and it is anything but a rubber stamp,? he said.

Comey was a federal prosecutor for 15 years prior to becoming an appointed official in the Bush administration, rising to the office of deputy attorney general. After leaving government he became general counsel at Lockheed Martin. Later he moved to the same position at hedge fund Bridgewater Associates.

As was definitely not the case with Chuck Hagel, Comey seems assured of confirmation in his new post.

?I?d be surprised ?if confirmation is not unanimous, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R) of Utah told the FBI nominee.

Clearwire shareholders vote for Sprint deal

(AP) ? Clearwire Corp. says its shareholders have voted in favor of selling the rest of its shares to majority owner Sprint Nextel Corp.

Sprint offered $5 per share for the rest of Clearwire, which runs a mobile broadband network that Sprint uses to provide "Sprint 4G" service on many of its phones.

Sprint hopes the deal will make it more competitive with bigger rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. It had to raise its original bid for Clearwire to overcome a competing bid from Dish Network.

Bellevue, Wash.-based Clearwire says about 82 percent of its shares that were not affiliated with Sprint were voted in favor of the sale. Sprint and Clearwire expect complete the transaction on Tuesday.

Sprint, in turn, has agreed to be acquired by Japan's Softbank for $21.6 billion.

Report: Biogenesis bans coming

Ryan Braun returns to the Brewers? lineup tonight after missing a month with a thumb injury and he?s back just in time for this bombshell report from ESPN.com saying that MLB plans to suspend Braun, along with Alex Rodriguez and as many as 20 other players.

According to T.J. Quinn and Mike Fish from ?Outside The Lines? Braun ?refused to answer questions during a recent meeting with Major League Baseball? and suspensions are expected ?sometime after next week?s All-Star break.?

Quinn and Fish quote sources saying that 100-game suspensions are being considered even though that?s the standard second-time offender penalty and neither Braun nor Rodriguez have served a suspension previously. The argument being made is that lying is viewed as the second offense.

Reports of MLB wanting to suspend 20 players first surfaced via Quinn and Fish back on June 4, but have mostly been dormant since then. During that time Biogensis director Tony Bosch was expected to meet with MLB officials and reveal details, leading to the hammer that?s apparently about to drop.
